Deer Kits:
To Build A Micro-Plot Oasis
Deer Kits are finally here! For several years now we've been using "kits" to complete our micro-plantings. These kits have proven to be efficient, convenient and successful enough that we had no choice but to streamline them and make them available to other habitat-sculpting food-plotters, gardeners and outdoorspeople in general. Not only do they have a diverse mix of both annuals and perennials, but they fit nicely under your arm or tucked in the corner of your backpack, they take a heck of a beating and are protected from moisture/rain. Our Deer Kits provide everything you need for a lush, 25ft x 25ft micro-plot and are the only kits of their type on the markety today.

Our deer micro-plot kits are composed of several 2 and 4 ounce flask-styled bottles (all contained in a 10 5/8" x 6 5/8" hinged, clear box), each containing select annuals and perennials (see Kit Contents at bottom of this page). There are two basic kits - the diffference between the two is in their perennial bases:
Kit #1 contains our Tug of War Alfalfa and Birdsfoot trefoil perennial blend, as well as our Vermont Red Clover blend. Kit #1 is better suited to drier, more upland sites or first time plantings. Kit #2 contains all the same annuals as Kit #1, but has our Vermont White Clover blend and our Birdsfoot Trefoil and Chicory mix as its perennials.
Kit #2 is better suited to wet micro-sites, or regions with more seasonal "moisture" (rain, fog, etc.). Both Deer Kits are intended to provide many of the necessary seasonal nibbles and nutrients that your deer love. They are planted in the same fashion as outlined in Whitetail Gardening, where annuals are planted in rows throughout your perennial base(s).

Also included in these Deer Kits are bottles of the necessary fertilizer, lime and nitrogen. They are in quantities (also 2 and 4 ounce flasks) that are proportional to the seed amount in the kit and the area you'll be planting. The nitrogen fertilizer is a necessary component of the kit, and enhances/aids your newly planted perennial base. Be sure to add fertilizer several more times (if necessary) throughout the growing season(s) if necessary!
After you've planted the contents in your kit, pay particular attention to which seed type/blend germinates and grows best in your plot (also note which seed blend is most preferred by your deer/wildlife!). Observing how each seed type grows indicates what type of soil you have and which seed blends will be most productive for future plantings. There is no substitute for simple observation and analysis!
